Just as developers address the problems with their product, the Mission Control Team ensures we address complex organisational challenges by instilling the right value and purpose within the company. By crafting solutions driven by empathy, needs and innovation, our focus enables the company to not only achieve strategic goals with strong business value, but also ensure that the goals are achieved through strong systems, clear processes, and capable people.

In Mavericks, doing the right thing goes beyond making the best decisions – it is about staying true to our value of simple working solutions, cutting through unnecessary bureaucracy. This was not something that emerged overnight, it was the result of every Maverick voicing out, challenging the status quo and actively pushing for change. Our culture of transparent communication and openness to change have brought us to where we are today.

starting out at mavericks

When I first joined the team, I was exceptionally afraid of asking questions - afraid of being a

burden, afraid of being unprepared… These thoughts clouded my judgement and was an

invisible rope holding me back. With a poor grasp of understanding and purpose in my work, I was unable to deliver quality work, making me feel frustrated and disengaged.

Eventually, I knew I could no longer go on like this as I realised I was actually pulling the team down more with my ways. With the team’s constant “Don’t Paiseh, just ask” motto ringing in my ears, I decided to take the step of courage and address my issues one at a time. To my surprise, not only was my team very willing to address my queries, they also further encouraged me to ask more. That support and delight I felt transformed my experience in the team. Beyond the “what” of my work, I was also able to understand the “How” and most importantly – the “Why”. The confidence I gained from this fuelled the courage in me to propose new simple working solutions for the team and the new interns.

I am extremely grateful I had the opportunity to make a positive change to our working processes and play a significant role in the team. That is what doing the right thing looks like to us: being proactive, honest and committed to learning. Hence, as a Maverick, we are socially responsible for each other, for our work, and for an ideal learning environment where we can all thrive. At the end of the day, don't be afraid to ask for help from any of your supportive teammates, we are usually just a poke away!

But, doing the right thing doesn’t stop at just asking questions. The next step is doing the right thing RIGHT - and that includes asking the RIGHT questions. Is your question just a google search away? Has it already been addressed in previous documentation or team meetings? Is it directly related to your task on hand. At the end of the day, you must have a clear goal in mind and understand the value of whatever you are doing. While questions have always been welcomed and appreciated within the team, asking questions that are well thought out with aclear purpose would further show your respect for your teammate’s time and attention. Next time before you jump to enthusiastically ask a question – take a step back, take your time to prepare your materials, craft a clear and concise question and then approach your fellow team members.

in summary

At the end of the day, doing the right thing and doing the thing right goes hand in hand. Always ask for help when you need it, but also take ownership of your own learning and do not be overly reliant on others for information you can easily obtain by yourself. That is how we not only build a great product, but a great team as well.
